La Rochelle 17000
La Rochelle was founded during the 10th century and became an important harbour in the 12th century.
For 1000 years La Rochelle was regarded as “the rebel city”, Protestant while the rest of France was Catholic. During the French Revolution and the Empire wars La Rochelle lost its importance. During the Second World Ware a german submarine base was implanted there. Though it was an important strategic target La Rochelle was hardly damaged during the bombings.
The modern La Rochelle boasts a pleasure port with around 5,000 berths (the largest on the Atlantic coast), a modern fishing port, excellent road and railway networks (TGV), plus a multi disciplinary university.
You can enjoy unlimited transport to travel through the Communauté d’Agglomération of La Rochelle (the 18 towns around La Rochelle) by bus, sea bus, or “yellow bike”(3 hours/day) for 1, 2, 3 or 7 days according to your needs, with either an individual or a family tariff.
